The collapse ofthis trade in the 1990s led Algeria to turn to - the West for loans. Uil revenues encouraged the West to offer export credits. The IMF providedloans to: help Algeria to meet payments on its massive $127- billion debt on condition that the goverment move toward a market-onented economy. However, these souces are now threatened by Algeria's growing political instability.
